The Texas Supreme Court has blocked a lower court order that had given some abortion clinics confidence to resume performing abortions. The order handed down Friday night by the state’s highest court comes just days after some abortion providers rushed to resume services. An lower court order issued this week by a Houston judge had reassured some doctors they could temporarily resume abortions up to six weeks into pregnancy. Before that, doctors across Texas had stopped performing abortions in the state after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and ended the constitutional right to abortion.

He came through two innings later with an opposite field homer off reliever Penn Murfee to give Oakland a 3-1 lead. The homer was Murphy’s ninth of the season. Oakland starter James Kaprielian earned his first victory of the season, keeping Seattle in check for six strong innings.
Tony Gonsolin continued his bid for his first All-Star Game appearance, pitching into the eighth inning as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Diego Padres 5-1. Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger hit home runs as Los Angeles won its third consecutive game and improved to 2-0 on a season-long 11-game homestand. Gonsolin became the first 10-game winner in the National League, while lowering his major league-leading ERA to 1.54. Trent Grisham hit a home run for the Padres and left-hander Blake Snell struck out a season-high 12. San Diego has dropped four of five games to the Dodgers this season.

With three appointees of former President Donald Trump in their 50s, the six-justice conservative majority seems poised to keep control of the court for years to come, if not decades. Its remaining opinions issued, the court began its summer recess Thursday, and the justices will next return to the courtroom in October.

The Winnipeg Jets are closing in on Rick Bowness as their head coach. A Jets spokesman told The Canadian Press on Friday that while nothing was finalized, Bowness “is the person we’re focusing on as our next head coach.” Bowness spent most of the past three NHL seasons coaching the Dallas Stars. He led them to the 2020 Stanley Cup final in the playoff bubble in Edmonton, where the Stars lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tropical Storm Bonnie has swept into Nicaragua bringing the threat of flooding from heavy rain, while heading for a predicted fast crossing on the way to the Pacific and a possible strengthening into a hurricane. Bonnie came ashore late Friday on Nicaragua’s Carribean coast about 75 miles (120 kilometers) south of Bluefields. Forecasters warn of the danger of significant flooding, with rains of up to 8 inches, and even more in isolated places. The storm is predicted to also cross over a part of Costa Rica during the night before moving out into the Pacific on Saturday. It is then forecast to gain power and possibily reach hurricane by Monday.
