The Laverne Cox Barbie is the fourth in the Tribute Collection that "celebrate visionaries for their incredible contributions, impact, and legacy as trailblazers." Cox is a four-time Emmy nominated actress, Emmy winning producer, and the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role on a scripted TV show.

Barbie has produced its first transgender doll in honor of Emmy award winning actress and LGBTQ rights activist Laverne Cox, according to multiple reports.

And, according to The Washington Post, the doll is already among the best sellers on Amazon.

“I hope all the kids who are feeling stigmatized when their health care is being jeopardized, whose ability to play sports (is curtailed), I hope they can see this Barbie and feel a sense of hope and possibility,” Cox reportedly said on NBC’s “Today” earlier this week.

The release of the doll comes at an important time, too, for transgender rights as Republican lawmakers have field nearly 200 state bills, according to the Post, that take aim at protections for the transgender and gay communities.

Cox has been one of the most influential and prominent transgender activists in the Western world, according to the Post, and that is something Barbie maker Mattell praised, noting her ability to move “beyond social expectations to live more authentically.”

Cox’s Barbie is dressed in a red ball gown, a silver bodysuit and has high-heeled boots and silver earrings, according to Today.

“It has been a dream for years to work with Barbie to create my own doll,” she said. “I can’t wait for fans to find my doll on shelves and have the opportunity to add a Barbie doll modeled after a transgender person to their collection.”
