SALEM, W.Va. (WV News) — Local residents and guests enjoyed carnival food and games, shopping and live music Sunday during the final day of this year's Salem Apple Butter Festival.

Abby McDonough, a Doddridge High School senior, was crowned the festival queen Thursday but rode through the parade Saturday and greeted guests for most of the weekend.

McDonough was also the 2019 festival teen queen and 2021's Doddridge County Fair queen.

"I definitely wanted to try to get crowned again because I had such great pageant directors. Doing pageants, I think, helps me grow and meet new people. I feel that I can be a leader for people and give them confidence while promoting the festival. I practiced (possible on-stage questions and interviews) super hard," she said.

"The weekend was amazing — it was a little chilly but there was great food, great music and great people."

McDonough, who earned a four-year scholarship from Salem University as part of her crowning, was only off the festival grounds for about an hour Saturday since she was part of the high school homecoming court. She returned to listen to country artist Bucky Covington.

McDonough and mother Kristi said Abby wasn't involved in pageants until her freshman year of high school, when she was Doddridge County Fair first runner-up and the year she was crowned Apple Butter Festival Teen Queen. Her community outreach also extends to teaching Pre-K and kindergarten students at the Doddridge County Learning Academy.

"She's definitely made an impact," Kristi McDonough said. "She's pretty outgoing. We're proud of her."

Salem's Barbie Dolly returned to sing gospel music on the main stage. She said she has sung Sundays at the festival for more than 30 years.

"It's never easy to perform, but you have to humble yourself," the Lighthouse Baptist Church member and soloist said.

Patty Sheppard, of Mannington, made plenty of earrings, sun catchers and other jewelry items to sell at her booth — Jewelry Designed and Handcrafted by Patty. She said the earrings and sun catchers are the most popular items and Sunday consisted of what was left from her weekend of sales.

A former sales worker until her retirement five years ago, Sheppard said the sun catchers take about 15 minutes each to make at her home. She will next sell her wares at the Monongah Christmas Craft Fair.

The festival was so busy that Salem Rifle and Pistol Club ran out of apple butter jars, according to festival committee member Linda Stuart. Still, she received inquiries from guests Sunday.

"We ran out Saturday evening and also at the Apple Butter Festival Shop," she said. "I've kept track of how many people who requested it so I can tell the committee so we can try to get more. It's been really overwhelming with the people interested in the homemade apple butter."

Stuart, who also knows how to make the preserve, hopes to convince farmers market vendors to sell their apple butter in 2023.

Stuart praised new Festival President Christy Howell's energy level and ideas, saying she expects the annual event to continue to grow under Howell's leadership.
